The Honest Dog
I was recently contacted about a 16 week old puppy who howled all day while her owner was at work. The owner no longer kept her crated but allowed her free reign, which helped.
Here are a few solutions:
Leave her on a good note with a treat/peanut butter-stuffed 'frozen' Puppy Kong. (Stuff treats in the Kong, fill the remainder with peanut butter, put it in the freezer overnight). That will occupy a bit of time.
Even though she's not being kenneled, leave a piece of clothing you've worn with her to cuddle up in in the crate. Make sure her crate is available so she has a safe place to go.
Leave a radio on, or the TV, for background noise. Little pupper may decide she has a favorite channel, who knows?
Make sure she has several 'enrichment' toys to occupy her time: Those puzzle toys like a hollow ball she has to work at to get the treats out of, or something similar. Make sure it doesn't have a lot of loose pieces; since little pup is unsupervised, we don't want to worry about swallowing chewed bits of toy. You can also pick up a Nylabone chew toy for her to work at while you're gone; I also like the white Red Barn stuffed bones - make sure to get one appropriate for the dog's size. The Red Barn white stuffed bones are pretty clean (don't leave a mess) and are good for puppy's jaw strength and teeth.
If you have a neighbor who can stop in and say hello, that will help too. 16 week old puppies will appreciate a bathroom break if the neighbor (or friend) can do that, too!
These are just a few ideas ...
